Domino's Macro Keyboard Project

Optimized for the Cooking Space

In a high-paced kitchen environment, a traditional keyboard falls short in meeting the needs of a busy team. Full-sized keyboards take up too much valuable counter space, slowing down workflow and cluttering the workspace. They’re also susceptible to damage from common ingredients like sauce and cornmeal, which can cause keys to stick or malfunction over time.

Beyond space and durability issues, using a full keyboard isn’t ideal for quick, precise actions. In a fast-moving environment, it’s challenging for team members to line up their fingers and quickly press the right keys without looking. This is where the new compact macro keyboard design excels. With its small footprint, team members can rest their hand on the edge of the device, allowing for intuitive, precise button presses without the need to constantly reposition or double-check key locations.

This macro keyboard is more than just a tool; it’s a solution tailored to the demands of fast-paced kitchens like Domino’s. By combining a compact design with modularity and ease of use, it offers a level of efficiency and durability that traditional keyboards can’t match. As kitchens evolve with technology, innovations like this keyboard pave the way for smoother, more streamlined operations. With future advancements such as voice activation and Bluetooth on the horizon, this design sets a new standard for ergonomic, space-saving, and self-sustainable equipment in the culinary industry.

Technical Specifications

This custom macro keyboard is powered by an Arduino Pro Micro, connected via a micro USB to any computer. The setup features 10 keys connected through a breadboard, ensuring simplicity and durability. Each key is connected with a pull-up resistor setup: when a key is pressed, it grounds the circuit, bringing the voltage to 0, which registers as a key press.

The code for this keyboard is streamlined and efficient, utilizing the Pro Micro's built-in pull-up capabilities. This approach minimizes external components and allows for a robust, compact design that’s easy to maintain and repair. Its modular construction means individual keys can be quickly swapped out, keeping the keyboard functional even in a busy environment.
